On 1 October, the WSG University in Bydgoszcz will officially commence the 2026/2027 academic year. The WSG academic community will take part in the official opening ceremony. One of the highlights of the event will be the matriculation of first-year students. The ceremony will begin at 12:00.
WSG is starting the new academic year with around 7,700 students. Over 2,700 applicants were admitted during this year’s admissions process. Psychology, Physiotherapy and Nursing proved the most popular. Many applicants also chose Creative Industries and Emergency Medical Services. As in previous years, Computer Science remains very popular, particularly areas related to cyber security.
New opportunities for international students
In the 2026/2027 academic year, WSG is also expanding its educational provision for international students. The university is launching degree programmes in Ukrainian across four fields of study: Computer Science, Creative Industries, Psychology and Management.
– Practical education and responding to the changing needs of the labour market remain one of the most important areas of development for WSG. We want students to acquire the skills, whilst still studying, that will enable them to consciously shape their professional future – says Prof. Dr Marek Chamot, Rector of WSG.
The development of WSG’s practical education model has once again been recognised in the nationwide ‘Perspektywy’ Ranking of Vocational Colleges. In 2025 and 2026, the college came second in Poland in its category.
Immatrculation and awards
The opening ceremony will begin at 12:00 with the national anthem. This will be followed by addresses from the President of WSG, Prof. (hon.) Krzysztof Sikora, and the Rector of WSG, Prof. Dr Marek Chamot, who will outline the university’s key areas of development and plans for the coming academic year.
A special highlight of the ceremony will be the matriculation of first-year students. The newly admitted students will take the oath and officially join the WSG academic community.
During the inauguration, honours will also be presented to individuals who have rendered outstanding service to the university and the region, as well as student awards for community involvement, creativity and sporting achievements.
In the ‘Sport and Physical Culture’ category, the following will be honoured::
- Dariusz Paczkowski – A rower for LOTTO-Bydgostia and a member of the WSG national team, he was the 2024 European University Champion in the lightweight single sculls. In 2026, he won two gold medals at the Polish Senior Championships in the lightweight double sculls and lightweight quadruple sculls events.

A lecture on Ludwik Rydygier
The inauguration will culminate in a lecture entitled ‘Ludwik Rydygier – the legacy and contemporary relevance of his work for modern medicine’, to be delivered by Prof. Janusz Kowalewski, MD, PhD, Director of the Franciszek Łukaszczyk Oncology Centre in Bydgoszcz.
The lecture will provide an opportunity to reflect on the achievements of one of Poland’s most distinguished surgeons and to examine their significance from the perspective of modern medicine.
A new year, the next chapter in WSG’s history
WSG is starting the academic year with around 7,700 students. The university’s history now spans more than 35,000 graduates of degree programmes and nearly 45,000 graduates of postgraduate and lifelong learning programmes.
Tomorrow’s opening ceremony will therefore mark not only the symbolic start of another academic year, but also the next chapter in the history of the community that has been shaped over the years by WSG’s students, graduates, staff and partners.
